Hadi Birajakli left Syria and re-located to Cairo in 2012, during the war that crippled and destroyed the lives of so many. The title of the song in Arabic translates as “to travel” but looking Safer from an English pronunciation, the symbolism of the word resonates even more. An excellent interview with the artist and the ideas behind the music video seen below can be found here.
Safer is a slow build, taking almost 60 seconds for the full backing band to kick in. Birajakli is heavily influenced in progressive rock and his ability to blend genres and create incredible music is spectacular. I highly recommend going through the handful of singles he’s released since 2024. Most recently, Birajakli is credited as composer for an EP released on Memphis Records by Egyptian songwriter Luka Salam. The EP “Hassasa” can be found here
