This past Saturday was a rough day for me. I was not at my best and it felt like a complete waste. I had zero motivation to do anything and decided to stay home (and subsequently miss a new art show opening at Holland Project and Closed Curtains perform at Club Underground). However, I knew that suhns were releasing a new video for their brand new track Cold that evening and around 7:30 PM I got to watch and listen for the first time. I connected with this song and instantly started to feel better. I listened and watched the track several more times and once I started focusing on the lyrics, everything that was bothering me started to melt away. Not many bands do this for me, but I connect with sunhs on every level.
Cold is probably one of sunhs strongest and most emotionally charged tracks they’ve put together so far. Their lyrics tend to resonate and bring out so many emotions we keep hidden within. Their songs are gentle reminders that we don’t need to feel alone, and Cold is no exception. According to Jagger and Cayden of suhns, the track was written together where they tweaked and combined their individual riffs into the track we hear today. Jagger and Cayden both leaned into creating a song about feelings of introvertedness and the sensation of feeling alone when bucking against social norms and expectations. For someone who is introverted, socially awkward, and struggling with dealing the social expectations of my age range, I get it. It’s a lonely feeling, and it makes you feel like something is wrong with you. I’m just glad this song exists as reminder: there is nothing wrong with you for being who you are.
The video that accompanies the track had been a work in progress for at least a month or so. The last component needed was the footage from the band’s most recent gig at Greenhouse. Once that was captured the video was finished and the end result is a masterpiece in storytelling. Cold was shot and directed by members of the band, with co-direction from Arvin Corpus and additional shots by Trev Stone and Joseph Green. The story was put together by Casey Green (suhns bassist) & Kobe Dimaso (the lead actor in the video) after a brainstorming session which Casey storyboarded. The idea was pitched to the rest of the band who loved the idea and offered their own ideas as well which would make it into the final cut. The project was presented to Arvin who signed up to co-direct.
sunhs are set to play Club Underground this coming Sunday in support of Silent Theory. Tickets can be found here
