[Beyond] Josy And The Mind Readers – From The Outside In

Getting back into music blogging means the chance to re-visit some old friends and see what they’re up to. Running a small, independent label is challenging to say the least; more so in this day and age of streaming where artists and labels are finding it very difficult to squeak out smatterings of revenue to stay afloat. When I launched Spirits Rebellious a few months ago, I decided to look for some labels I had known back in my days living in San Francisco. It made me happy to see Father/Daughter Records still going strong as well as Gold Robot Records.

Going through the label’s discography, I got my dose of nostalgia seeing the names of Yalls, Colossal Yes, Monster Rally, and Roman Ruins; all bands I had either seen live, worked with or wrote about in my previous endeavor. When I saw a new release from Gold Robot had hit my Instagram, I had to check it out. The track is titled From The Outside In from Josy And The Mind Readers and it’s fantastic.

Coming from Norfolk Virginia, Josy and The Mind Readers is the new project from Josiah Schlater who’s prior work can be found with the indie band Ladada. While Ladada started as a solo project for Josiah and morphed in the fast paced garage surf rock project it is today, his new venture remains a relatively solo venture with a more mellow and softer sound. According to Gold Robot’s description of the upcoming EP titled sigh some more (because it releases endorphins and reduces anxiety), each of the five tracks were written over different periods of Schlater’s life as a song writer. I can only assume from this detail that the EP will be very personal, yet make an interesting look into Josy’s mind, which isn’t lost on me as to how he titled his solo project.

The EP will release on June 5th and can be picked up here
