Yesterday saw the glorious release a new single from Reno’s Ranger. Originally written and recorded back in 2022, the song received some final polishing this past month before the band felt it was finished. The story of Proper Lover is an interesting one and instead of paraphrasing or missing important details, I’ll post what the band had to say about it from their Instagram:
“we accidentally made a pop song back in 2022. Like…an actual pop song…we’ve spent the last three years pretending that wasn’t the case, but eventually you have to stop gaslighting yourself. It’s called proper lover. To be fair, the version you’re hearing wasn’t actually finished until about a month ago. We tracked most of the music back in 2022, but something about the song just needed time. I think we needed time. Looking back, I think I spent a long time writing about things I wasn’t quite ready to understand yet. It’s strange hearing it now because it feels less like an old song and more like a message that showed up a little too early.”
Proper Lover is absolutely amazing and I love the track. I enjoy learning about how songs can find a new light, particularly when the song predates a band’s more well known material or sound. This is still a Ranger a song, through and through and gets me moving like everything else they’ve released so far.
