I’ll be headed out to the Potentialist Workshop’s June Bug fundraiser this coming weekend and in addition to checking out the event and art space, they also booked some solid bands to play later in the evening. Last Month’s Fairy Faire saw suhns and Negative Association play their incredible ship-themed stage. For June Bug, Rigorous Proof and Heterophobia will be performing, starting at 5pm. I was familiar with Rigorous Proof, but Heterophobia was a new one for me.
Heterophobia have been making their mark on the local music scene since the late 2010’s with two EPs and two albums released since then. The band describe themselves as reverb-drenched, queer-art punk and from my time spent with their discography, I would have to agree. I absolutely love their debut EP “Out” with it’s lo-fi, DIY feel and sound. They soon followed with their first LP titled “Chlorine Dreams” which is a deeper and cleaned up release which leans more into their signature punk sound. A year later, their second LP titled “Deathless” was released which builds upon and expands on the riff-heavy punk sound they polished for “Chlorine Dreams”.
Heterophobia’s most recent release came out in 2024, an EP titled “Grooms”, which followed up the single Cadaver which dropped in 2022. The first two tracks, Grooms and Beneath both feature acoustic guitar with excellent melodies, vocals and composition. I absolutely loved how this EP opened. There is something about these two tracks that grabbed my attention and the one’s I kept coming back to after spending some time listening to all that Heterophobia has released so far. They’ve put out quality music since their inception and only seem to get better with each new release. June Bug can’t come soon enough.
