Fik, meaning “in you” in Arabic, is the latest single from Lebanese-French artist Shereen Suleiman. The track is a collaboration with Lebanese pianist Mark Ernest, who’s keys provide so much layered depth to a chilled-out and minimalist song. Fik is lo-fi jazzy but also has strong elements of neo-soul and R&B to it. About 2/3’s of the way through, subtle tabla (a goblet-shaped hand drum) rhythms make their appearance, which got me head nodding at this point. From Suleiman’s Instagram, she describes the song as, “the story of a woman addressing a man who exists only in her imagination. Through him, she dreams a deep, ideal love-beautiful, perfect, yet entirely unreal”.
Fik is the follow up to her first single, Ghareeb (which translates to “weird”) and is highly experimental in nature. Having worked in the artistic fields like theater, cinema and radio host, Suleiman channels her artist vision into her music. She admits Ghareeb isn’t entirely accessible in an interview here, but as an independent artist, she is making the music she wants to, which falls in line with her artistic expression. There is an album being prepped as well, and I am very much looking forward to this release.
