I first discovered Atlanta’s Improvement Movement in early 2024 through a King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard post album shuffle on a streaming platform (or maybe it was Tame Impala’s Live Versions, I can’t remember this detail anymore) I was using at the time and was very intrigued. They sounded different from anything I had heard recently but the track Strange Secrets Worth Knowing seemed familiar. It leaned into weird indie psychedelia that I crave and I played the track a few times back to back before diving into the album. With an album named Don’t Delay, Join Today, I really didn’t now what to make of them. But I kept listening and it soon became a record I had on steady rotation for the remainder of the year.
Fast forwarding a few years later, the band have released another LP in 2025 titled Stomp which is more polished and indie pop than the experimental indie psych gem I had found the year prior. The band have also released a live recording which can be found here. The band have been putting out music consistently with each new release seeing the band expanding on and finding their sound. Do I want more Don’t Delay, Join Today? Yeah, of course I do but Improvement Movement are too talented to remain an obscure, funky find on Spotify.
Last Friday, I got a PR email from the band stating they had recently signed with ATO Records and had a new single prepped called, Still Cold. This was excellent news to hear. I was at work but snuck in a quick listen to the new single and loved it. The production value on the track is solid and again showcases the band building on from Stomp into a direction they want to be at. I’m unsure of when an album will be released or announced but for the time being, it’s another fantastic track from a band that deserves all the recognition.
