The Chutes was an old amusements park in San Francisco that opened in 1895 on Haight Street with two others opening soon after on Fulton Street and Fillmore Streets. They all officially closed by 1911 through land sales via development and in the Fillmore Chutes case, fire. The attraction was a large flume ride that had visitors ride down a 300 foot drop into a pool of water. Having lived in Inner Richmond for several years, I’m left wondering what this attraction would have looked like back then. Rooted in both the City’s history and hardcore music scene, husband and wife duo that make up The Chutes have not only given us a lesson on SF history but have also created an album that exchanges the loud, aggressive sounds of hXc for jangly guitars and blissful melodies. Kenny and Erika have created exceptional bright indie pop that I can not get enough of.
